Educational Objectives

Point-of-care ultrasound

  1. Understand the basics of ultrasound physics.
  2. Understand the principles of image resolution, depth, gain, artifact, Doppler as they relate to point of care ultrasound.
  3. Understand the appropriate use of common ultrasound probes.
  4. Understand the usage of image archival and Qpath.
  5. Perform procedural and diagnostic ultrasound studies, longitudinally through PGY 1-3 training.
  6. Submit and receive feedback on procedural and diagnostic ultrasound studies on Qpath, longitudinally through PGY 1-3 training.

Lung ultrasound

  1. Know the indications, uses and limitations of lung ultrasound.
  2. Know the technique to perform lung ultrasound studies.
  3. Interpret lung US findings indicative of lung parenchymal and pleural disease.
  4. Interpret normal lung US findings and demonstrate a normal lung US exam on a standardized patient.

Abdominal free fluid ultrasound

  1. Know the technique to assess the abdomen for free fluid.
  2. Appreciate how the pretest probability influences the clinical interpretation of abdominal free fluid.
  3. Demonstrate abdominal views for assessing free fluid on a standardized patient.

IVC Ultrasound

  1. Know the technique to assess the IVC with ultrasound.
  2. Appreciate the very limited clinical utility of interpreting the IVC with ultrasound.
  3. Demonstrate the IVC view on a standardized patient.

Thoracentesis

  1. Know the indications, contraindications, risks and benefits of thoracentesis (informed consent).
  2. Know the relevant anatomy to performance of thoracentesis.
  3. Understand the advantages to performing thoracentesis under ultrasound guidance.
  4. Know the required equipment for and the necessary preparation for performing ultrasound guided thoracentesis.
  5. Know the technique to perform ultrasound guided thoracentesis.
  6. Practice performance of ultrasound guided thoracentesis with appropriate technique on the thoracentesis trainer.

Paracentesis

  1. Know the indications, contraindications, risks and benefits of paracentesis (informed consent).

Lumbar Puncture

  4. Know the technique to perform lumbar puncture.
  5. Practice performance of lumbar puncture with appropriate technique on the lumbar puncture trainer.
